The importance of Electrical Safety training for both new employees and as a refresher for seasoned veterans cannot be overstated. According to the US Department of Labor, electrocution is one of the main causes of on-the-job deaths o findustrial workers. Within this group, skilled trades personnel – electricians in particular – are 2 times more likely to be seriously injured or killed than non-skilled trades. Statistically, the individual at greatest risk is a journeyman electrician between the ages of 30 and 39 with roughly 20 years of on-the-job experience.
With a seven-fold increase in OSHA’s penalty structure for violations and a much greater emphasis on willful and multiple violations of one standard, Organizations cannot afford to be out of compliance. OSHA’s mandated training requirements under 29 CFR 1910.332 requires that employees who “...face a risk of electrical shock that is not reduced by electrical installation requirements...” must receive electrical safety training. This training includes practices for qualified and unqualified persons.
